CHALLENGE

Create a compelling story, narrative and film around an ice cream nightlight without using vocal scripts.

MY ROLE

As director and script writer, I created and wrote the storyline around the product, created the visual mood board and direction, drew the storyboards, casted the actors, styled the actors, and directed the shots. Sophie brought the film to fruition with her assistance around the production, videoing and editing.

APPROACH

With the ice cream night light as the product, I started to brainstorm around what different user experiences for the product might be and how those experiences effect human emotion and behavior. I then began to write out different scenarios for the script which led to a cohesive storyline that had a narrative arch and a way to connect viewers to the product and film.

LESSONS LEARNED

Filming a short film over 3 weeks with only two people was a massive challenge. Location, people (actors) and props are incredibly important in emphasizing a specific style and can really bring a sense of cohesiveness to a movie, but at the end of the day if the story isn’t strong and the narrative won’t connect with viewers it won’t be as successful. Additionally, editing can make or break a movie. If I had more time, I would work more on editing the film and shortening it to be more concise with a wider variation of shots.
